When ECC ecosystem was released, it was known by the name of R/3 system. It was improved version of previous R/2 system.
As soon as it was released to the market, many early adapters those who were in need of faster system, switched to R/3.
It does not mean that R/2 system will no longer work, It just mean that newer, faster, more efficient system is now available. And now when S/4 is released, it will not kill ECC but it will definitely be phased out without further complementary and extended support and license from SAP itself but that won’t stop SAP Partners from building new applications on existing system.
