How can I master SAP?
works at SAP
When you say ‘Master SAP’, it is sort of vague, as SAP is a massive system consisting of many, many modules, Industry Solutions, Partner Solutions and custom developments.
Given that, I will tell you there are a lot ways to learn it, and the way I am going to describe it is somewhat controversial but it worked for me. Basically, decide which module you want to start with based on your background, in my case, I had a military logistics background, and was guided by SAP to do both the Materials Management module and SAP FICO module to start with. I got lucky in that they initially sent me to the SAP Academy for MM and then, later to the SAP Business Warehouse Academy and then later on, I went to the SAP SEM Academy. Due to my leadership background, they also had me get SAP ASAP certified and ultimately, drove me to get my PMP.
Later on, with years of experience in various roles, they then asked me to take on the role of Industry Principle, which comes with a lot of mandatory training (in my case, I actually completed the training, on six different industries, but they all had functional similarities), though I am not sure if that training is generally available to the public, but it was very valuable. Coupled with that, they had a very good program called Value Engineering they also had me go through and get certified in (helps in making the business case, a key skill in enterprise software sales).
To really ‘master it’, I can honestly say, it was a combination of all the training, as well as doing a lot of different SAP projects, plus studying adjacent modules (with SAP you can pretty much study anything you want, it is incredible the number of resources available internally), such as SD or PP, or FI-CO + REFX.
Just know that whatever you know, in six months, they will release a bunch of new enhancements, buy some more companies, change the methodology, etc., and you will start getting push back from clueless recruiters who have no idea. So, truly, you can’t ‘master it’, you can just get really good at some parts, try to understand the overall picture of it, use my our mind map to get that bit, and get a lot of project experience in different industries or least, try to avoid doing the same year of experience over and over again.
Software Engineer – IT Consulting
It would be nearly impossible to master all of SAP.
However, you first should consider if you want to focus on development or functional work.
If you want to focus on development, learning ABAP will give you the skills needed to work in any of the SAP modules.
If you want to focus on functional work (the business side), you’ll need to learn the functionality that supports one of the many business functions. For example, if you want to work in Finance, learning accounting principles, accounts receivables, accounts payables, asset accounting, etc. can give you a leg up.
Understanding the business principles are just as important as understanding how to navigate SAP. Once you know how the business processes, you can learn the SAP configuration required to support that business process.
SAP offers many courses, and you can find third-party materials on YouTube, Udemy, or any other content provider.
