Working as SAP Basis Consultant

HANA is SAP’s own developed Database for it’s application suites. SAP has different types of application suits which are suitable for various business needs. Currently SAP’s main market is on ERP which has more than 60% of market share with it when compared to it’s competitors. Before HANA is introduced by SAP, all of its Business Suite Applications run on all leading Databases like Oracle, DB2, MaxDb, SQL where it can dependent on all these DB vendors, SAP aquired few of its competitors w.r.t DB but there is major competence from Oracle, SQL and few others.

Thinking of this SAP started developing it’s own database and succeeded it in the form of HANA, it defined as High performance analytical appliance.

The definition it self says that the functionality of HANA, with high performancec, yes it should be also.

There are few major differences between traditional Databases and HANA, where as traditionla databases requires lower memory than HANA w.r.t SAP Business Suites but where as HANA requires more memory which is nearly 10 times greater than traditional databases, it is something wondering but the functionlaity resides in HANA required that much of memory to work on.

Yes, HANA requires more memory and h/w upgradations if a company wants to acquire it in their landscapes, but the thoughts of SAP in HANA are now become reality and it succeeded.

The main concept of HANA is In-Memory, where all the DB resided in RAM instead of Hard drive of machine. It’s true that all the Database of a business suite application resides on RAM, that’s why its retrieval is nearly 15–20 times faster than traditional Business Suite application with other Database and HANA proved it also in real time.

Now SAP HANA moved to cloud and it has introduced many number of inbuilt connections to various business requirements and latest internet revolutions and conecpets and also it highly using for analytics, predictions and many more like IOT, BlockChain, Big Data connectivity etc..

SAP also released Business Suits on HANA from ERP 6 Ehp7 onwards and Netwaver 750 onwards, it also introducced a dedicated Business Suite S/4HANA only on SAP HANA, now a days it is trending topic on both Cloud and On-Premise.

There much more information to add about HANA here, but it is my overall information on HANA.

Thanks

Hello,

Let you know actually what SAP HANA is, where it is a modern, in-memory database and a platform that is deploy-able on-premise or in the cloud and column-oriented.

It is a combination of HANA Database, Data Modeling, HANA Administration and Data Provisioning in one single suite.

It is also a development platform, providing an infrastructure and tools for building high-performance applications based on SAP HANA Extended Application Services (SAP HANA XS).

It is the foundation of various SAP HANA editions like the SAP HANA Platform Edition, providing core database technology.

The SAP HANA Platform Edition integrates a number of SAP components including the SAP HANA database, SAP HANA studio and SAP HANA clients and can also refer blogs for detailed information.

Features of SAP HANA:

The main features of SAP HANA are given below:

  • SAP HANA is a combination of software and hardware innovation to process the huge amount of real time data.
  • Based on multi-course architecture in distributed system environment.
  • Based on row and column type of data-storage in database.
  • Used extensively in Memory Computing Engine (IMCE) to process and analyze massive amount of real time data.
  • It reduces cost of ownership, increases application performance and enables new applications to run on real time environment that were not possible before.
  • It is written in C++ which supports and runs on only one Operating Systems use Linux Enterprise Server 11SP1/2.

Need for SAP HANA:

Today, most successful companies respond quickly to the market changes and to new opportunities. A key to this is the effective and efficient use of data and information by analyst and managers.

HANA overcomes the limitations mentioned below:

  • Due to the unavailability of real time data, analysis and processing results are delayed.
  • Due to increase in “Data Volume”, it is a challenge for the companies to provide access to the real time data for analysis and business use.
  • It involves high maintenance cost for IT companies to store and maintain large data volumes.

Having knowledge in SAP HANA at the beginning of your career will always keep you on higher priority.Hope, the answer is relevant.

Other answers cover the definition of HANA. I’ll try to explain the same in simple terminology.

It is SAP’s foray into Real Time Analytics.

what’s so special about “Real Time Analytics” ??

We know Information is the key , well, so is time. Any sizeable business generates a tremendous amount of data even from it’s basic operations. The data gets so huge that extracting meaningful information, which enables a business to take decisions becomes a big pain.

As a result , a typical business running on an information system waits for hours just to get this information , forget about processing this further.

This limitation exists because of the current way in which data is processed .
As a result of this there are broadly two kinds of products for such information processing in the market:
One that handle transactional workloads and one that handle analytical workload.

SAP HANA brings you the best of the both worlds Due to its hybrid structure for processing transactional workloads and analytical workloads fully in-memory.

Simply put: It is Chuck Norris of business (DBM) applications. Here’s why:

Since the SAP HANA database resides entirely in-memory all the time, additional complex calculations, functions and data-intensive operations can happen on the data directly in the database, without requiring time-consuming and costly movements of data between the database and applications. This incredible simplification and optimization of the data layer is the “killer feature” of SAP HANA because it removes multiple layers of technology and significant human effort to get incredible speed.
