Business intelligence (BI) is an application used for giving meaning to raw data that an organization has. The raw data is cleansed, stored and applied with business logic’s to be useful for enterprise users to make better business decisions. This data can be presented in the form of reports and can be displayed in the form of tables, charts etc. which is efficient and easier to analyse and make business decisions.

SAP BusinessObjects BI (also known as BO or BOBJ) is a suite of front-end applications that allow business users to view, sort and analyze business intelligence data. The suite includes the following key applications:

  • Crystal Reports — Enables users to design and generate reports
  • Xcelsius/Dashboards — Allows users to create interactive dashboards that contain charts and graphs for visualizing data
  • Web Intelligence — Provides a self-service environment for creating ad hoc queries and analysis of data both online and offline
  • Explorer –– Allows users to search through BI data sources using an iTunes-like interface. Users do not have to create queries to search the data and results are shown with a chart that indicates the best information match.

I have tried to explain a little bit about Basis and ABAP which are the two key technical areas. As I explain in that answer, it is your background in other technologies/domains that might decide what you will find interesting to start learning in SAP. If you can provide some information about that, the community might be able to give you some more specific recommendations.

Broad skill needed for every SAP product is administration (BASIS) and development (ABAP). Hence BASIS and ABAP are 2 major technical skills in SAP.

Other technical skills are those that are needed for specific technical Products like EP, XI, MI, MDM . To begin with fresher usually get into ABAP and then horn their skills for other product if they are capable enough.
