What is the difference between SAP functional and technical?
Answer 1
SAP functional is responsible client interactions, requirement gathering, design, writing functional docs (like Specification docs, test scripts, user manuals etc.), functional testing and support on functional aspects. It also includes config changes in the system.
Whereas SAP technical is responsible for the build. Uses ABAP or OOABAP or JAVA languages to write the code as specified by the SAP functional. Usually deals with areas like workflows, UI, integration, reports and so on.
In summary, we can say SAP functional is responsible for the functionalities or processes in a SAP system. Whereas SAP technical looks into the technical aspects like coding.

I know people who consider both functional and technical as “technical”, so the distinction is getting a little dated, but functional means configuring the application to support business processes (i.e. entering the business rules) and requires understanding of things such as accounting, plant maintenance, sales etc. Technical means the SAP infrastructure on which the functional applications run, such as the supporting the landscape, ensuring the system runs correctly, and developing or maintaining functional applications.

A functional consultant is one who interprets business processes, writes specs, and typically does the system configuration to reflect business requirements.
A technical consultant is typically a programmer, who develops programs specified by functional consultant to fill gaps between business processes and ERP (eg. helps in customizing the ERP code).
