The C4C (Cloud for Customer) is SAP’s move back into cloud-based solutions for all their software (ERP, CRM, Planning…). This is a move they made once before, and abandoned about 7 years ago (selling their existing customer base’s implementations to AT&T). Now with the cost of hosted solutions coming down, hardware prices are cheaper and newer companies are looking for a budgetable monthly cost without owning their own solution.
The vast majority of SAP customers are “on-premise” meaning they own their own hardware, employee Basis, DBA, functional personnel, have disaster recovery and the other costs that come with owning the solution on site.
It remains to be seen whether SAP will stay in the cloud-based hosting game for many years. The big “gotcha” with cloud solutions is the difficulty and challenge of moving your company’s SAP solution to another vendor. In most cases it is a large extra expense to do so; in some cases an entirely new project must be budgeted to move the data and software over to a new cloud vendor.
