They Analyse, design and implement automated solutions for the organization. They spend most of their time working on the SAP system, analyzing and designing business processes. SAP people work on systems as well as with people. Neither they stick to one place nor do they roam a lot.

Let me infer that by “doing SAP” you mean studying and understanding one of the SAP’s module/subject.
That alone could lead me to some possible scenarios:
You would learn some SAP functionalities from a user standpoint
You would lead how to configure and implement some SAP functionalities.
In my opinion SAP is the most used ERP system available (which in simple words would translate to everything a company back office needs: procurement, production, Sales, accounting, managerial accounting, quality management, project management). But there are other high-quality competitors as well.
Understanding SAP’s functionalities from a user’s perspective would allow you to think better how the system integrates with other modules and departments in the company you work for.
Now, from a Consultant’s standpoint you’d need to initially specialize in one module and be able to provide functional support to running SAP installations (and implement new SAP installations at a later point in your career).
The way I see one of these options becoming useful for you is if you fall into one of these areas. Otherwise there might be a cost with an uncertain return.
If you, let’s say, want to improve your CV with SAP background,c there could be the situation where the company you apply for a position uses, let’s say, Peoplesoft. In that case knowing SAP functionalities might be an advantage, but IMHO will not translate directly into a better fit for the position.
